Bharatanatyam emerged in Singapore after World War 2 when immigrants in India started immigrating to Singapore in hopes of building a better life for their families. Immigrants practiced their culture and traditions in social gatherings and religious rituals, Bharatanatyam being one of them. However, Bharatanatyam was not actively practiced due to the reputation it earned.  The dance form was heavily associated with Devadasis as previously mentioned. However, during the Vijayanagara Era and the British occupation in India, Devadasis were associated with being courtesans and reformists in India viewed the practice as child abuse as Devadasi children started as early as age 5-6. Therefore, the practice was heavily looked down on and immigrants did not want their children to be associated with such a practice. Moreover, there was a lack of Bharatanatyam experts that could help educate the youth. However, individuals like Uma Rajan and Santha Baskar helped give Bharatnatyam a place in a foreign country like Singapore. Moreover, Bharatanatyam is still being practiced and acts an element of bonding for the Indian community in Singapore.

Let's explore the significance of Bharatanatyam in different aspects across Singapore!

Educational Significance

Many primary and secondary schools in Singapore offer Indian dance as a co-curricular activity. There, they focus on various forms of Indian dance, Bharatanatyam being a significant one. Students learn the different techniques involved in Bharatanatyam. This gives them ample exposure on the dance form. Moreover, when these students start learning Bharatanatyam at an early age and are given opportunities like this in their schools, it might interest them to pursue Bharatanatyam as a future career.

Apsaras Dance Company was founded in Singapore in 1977 by Mr and Mrs Sathyalingam. The dance academy provides training in different Indian dance forms including Bharatanatyam. Most of the graduates from the dance academy move on to become renowned dancers, dance instructors and have founded more Indian dance institutions in Singapore. Apsaras Dance Company is just one of the many Indian dance companies in Singapore.

Religious Significance

Bharatanatyam started out as a dance for the gods and was frequently performed in temples as an offering to the gods. Even though the dance form has evolved beyond temples and to the stage, it is still performed in temples during religious rituals.

Social Significance

Many Bharatanatyam dancers showcase their performances at community centers and other public areas during events. Singapore is a multi-racial country and therefore, getting to know about the different races that live in Singapore is important. Bharatanatyam performances allow others to be well-informed on the Indian culture and gives them an idea as to how Bharatanatyam is like. With this, more people of different races and ethnicities might be keen on learning about Bharatanatyam or learning the dance form itself.
